Occasionally, older adults develop problems with improper use of alcohol and drugs. As a rule, misuse of alcohol and prescription medication is more prevalent in this population than abuse of illicit drugs. Conditions associated with aging such as chronic pain, increased feelings of anxiety and depression, as well as cognitive confusion can all contribute to an older person’s risk for misusing substances.

Through West Bergen Senior Choices, evaluation and treatment focusing on the special needs of the senior population is available. Our counselors are experienced in addressing the unique physical and psychological aspects of older people struggling with substance abuse issues. Family support and education is also available.
